I occasionally see girls in kimonos around Tokyo, but have not managed to snap a picture of any of them. I either do not have my camera with me, or my hands are occupied.

Geishas on the other hand, are a rare sight. While in Kyoto, I managed to catch quick glimpses of two geishas walking on the street - one even walked right past me. I proffered a "konichiwa", but there was no reply, which was not entirely unexpected. To be entertained by a geisha costs an upward of USD3000.00 a night. As a little cog in a big wheel, I could not afford the services of a geisha, so I had to be satisfied with a maiko performance which cost me a measly USD 34.80 - a maiko is a geisha apprentice (ie not a fully fledged geisha).

Here are some pictures I took at the performance.

Hope you like them.

I am sorry I have not been in contact for a while. I have been away travelling. After 5 months here, I am falling in love with Japan and everything Japanese.

Absolute best way to travel: Shinkansen (新幹線). Right on time, every time.

Favourite place in the world: Waiting for my 新幹線 at the Tokyo Station - 新幹線 platform.

Most memorable moment: Looking at the expressions of the passengers while speeding past a station on the 新幹線- a look of appreciation, approval, and even pride at the sight of their national symbol. Absolutely brilliant.

I know some of you have asked me why I am not in any of the pictures I have taken.

My objective is not to show the number of places I have visited, or where I have visited, but merely to convey the beauty of the place, through my photos. And its hard enough to do so already.

A photograph is a moment frozen in time. No two photographs will ever be the same. Remember that.

I know I said I would put up some pictures of my weekend trip away, so here goes...

I went to Nikko (日光) which is a sacred site stretching all the way back to the middle of the 8th century, when the Buddhist priest Shodo established a hermitage there. I did a tour of the temples on the first day, and a hike on the second day.

I took many pictures on my trip, but in this entry, I will put up some pictures of the waterfalls I saw while on my hike. For those of you that are interested, I did the Senjogahara Shizenkenkyu-ro hike, which is about 10 or 11 kilometres long, and takes about 3-4 hours. I started at Yumoto onsen, and finished up at Lake Chuzenji. The hike was very scenic (especially with the melting snow) - you start off by walking along a bubbling brook, which leads into the picturesque marshland of Senjogahara, against the backdrop of snow-capped mountains, and end up at Lake Chuzenji at the top of a 75m high waterfall. I highly recommend it. My pictures are in the order that I saw the waterfalls/rapids.
